The Heraclitus recieved a wonderful review from SAMPLA, fellow questing spirits of the marine world, following their their tour of the ship in Mossel Bay.

The Heraclitus tied up at the Navy dock about 10am this morning, March 9th, completing its historic rounding of the Cape of Good Hope (almost, just Cape Point itself to do after drydock)!  We had a thankfully smooth voyage from Mossel Bay, our careful analysis of the weather paying off.  Last night, under starry skies with seals providing phosphorescent views off the stern, under full sail we entered False Bay about 4am as planned.  We motored carefully into the Bay and made our approach in calm winds after receiving clearance by radio from the Navy.  We were greeted at the dock by enthusiastic hands.  John and Shirley met us on the way in and put Chili onboard so she could sail in with us.  The crew is in great spirits and all are ready for some welcome R&R, before jumping into drydock preparations.

The South African media has been quick to report the adventures of the Heraclitus. Read some of the recent articles written about the ship:

On September 12, 2007 the Heraclitus dropped anchor at Antsiranana, also called Diego Suarez, in a spectacular bay in the North of Madagascar, where the southeaster screeches over the barren mountains with full force,  and the bluegreen water is always generously decorated with white caps. The voyage from Padang, Sumatra was breathtaking at times, one of the Heraclitus' fastest ocean crossings, averaging more than 100 nm per day, on several days even 150nm! On many days and nights the magnificent Southern Indian Ocean gave the now seasoned crew a taste of its might. Sailing in force 7-8 seas, port holes and hatches closed, the crew marvelled as the Heraclitus danced through big swells and high breaking waves in huge following seas, with strong winds from the aft quarter. Sailing into the bay of Diego Suarez with the incoming tide, under blue skies and rough seas, she was greeted by a breeching Humpback whale and dolphins dancing in the rough waters.

After a week's pause at Antsiranana, the Heraclitus explored the North West coast of Madagascar, rounded the North Cape and continued to Nosi Mitsio and then to the town of Helleville, on the island of Nosi Be. Heraclitus spent 1 week in Russian Bay, 20nm South of Helleville and is now anchored off the island of Morombe, a small island also 20nm South of Helleville, near the entrance to a river. The ship will return to Helleville before departing to Nosi Be on November 6th, 2007.

We will then cross the notorious Mozambique Channel, and arrive Richard's Bay, South Africa circa November 25, 2007. The ship will remain in Richard's Bay till mid-January 2008, during which time the crew will make land expeditions into South Africa and prepare the ship for the the next major leg of the trip, Heraclitus' first rounding of the legendary Cape of Good Hope to Cape Town, a voyage of around 700 nm.

This voyage offers a unique opportunity for adventure, learning to sail, cultural and ecological exploration. If you are interested in joining for the leg from Madagascar to South Africa, and/or onward, please contact Capt. Rio Hahn at rio@adventure.org or USA Tel. 1-760-723-2318.
