RV HERACLITUS UNCOVERED Major Milestone for the Rebuild
After years of dedicated effort, the rebuild of the RV Heraclitus has reached a pivotal moment: the ship has emerged from its protective cocoon, revealing a freshly painted hull and deck. This transformation marks one of the most significant milestones in the vessel’s restoration journey.
With the cocoon—an elaborate shed that sheltered the vessel during extensive structural work—finally dismantled, the Heraclitus now stands weatherproof and revitalized in black and red. A full coat of marine-grade paint, generously sponsored by Jotun Paints, now protects the hull and deck, offering both durability and a striking visual statement.

Equally important has been the installation of numerous hatches and portholes sealing the ship against the element and bringing the Heraclitus one step closer to being ocean-ready once again.

None of this would would be possible without the convergence of community, craftsmanship, and generous support. Omar Fayed, the Quaker Hill Foundation and Maine Community Foundation provided essential grant funding making these advancements a reality.
Crew dismantling the cocoon
Dozens of volunteering crew and Heraclitus alumni contributed their time, skills, and resources—each rivet turned and brushstroke applied a testament to their commitment. This and last year’s team included Oddur Runarson, George Blake, Jean Vanmaldergem, Camille Bosquet, Rebecca Watson, Klaus-Peter Eiberle, Barbara Stoeckigt, Dirk Sikken, David Anderson, Joan Canet, Cesc Villarubias & team, Perle Deaibes, Felipe Bautista, Rodrigo Zapata Luna, Basile Maytrand, Christine Handte, Claus Tober and many many others.

This phase of the rebuild celebrates more than just technical achievement; it affirms a collective vision to revive a vessel that has inspired generations of explorers, scientists, and dreamers. As the project continues to move forward, the freshly revealed Heraclitus stands as a symbol of resilience, cooperation, and the enduring spirit of adventure.
